For months, and especially through the weeks that Yao Ming was in China trying to dampen expectations with comments that seemed strangely pessimistic, the Rockets ached for this day.
Yao had been back on the court since late May. He had been working through one-on-one and two-on-two drills for weeks. He had been pushing himself through drills every bit as demanding as those that the team invited the media to come watch. But Yao had declined to participate in such a public display or the interviews that would follow until one more checkup.
The news from the examination was ideal—Yao's stress fracture had fully healed and he would be cleared for all on-court workouts—but it was a stretch to call it news.

Houston Rockets forward Chase Budinger will miss the start of training camp after spraining his left ankle during a workout Thursday, the Houston Chronicle reported. The ankle injury will keep him from basketball-related workouts for four to six weeks. Budinger averaged 8.9 points last season as a rookie and is expected to compete for more playing time this year. Last season, he averaged 20.1 minutes a game.

With the field down to 16 teams, the knockout stage of the basketball world championship begins Saturday with two highly anticipated matchups. Balkan rivals Serbia and Croatia, who fought a war in the early 1990s, play the opening game at the Sinan Erdem Dome. That's followed by Spain vs. Greece, two of the pre-tournament favorites.

Aleksandar Rasic made four free throws in the last 11 seconds Thursday to help Serbia upset top-ranked Argentina 84-82 and win Group A at the basketball world championship. Argentina captain and Houston Rockets forward Luis Scola sank two free throws with 38 seconds left to make it 77-77, but Serbia's Dusko Savanovic hit a 3-pointer with 18 seconds remaining.

Luis Scola scored 32 points to help Argentina beat Angola 91-70 on Monday, essentially securing its place in the second round of the world championship. Scola scored 17 of Argentina's 23 points in the first quarter as the South Americans built a three-point lead. The Houston Rockets power forward finished the first half with 21 points as Argentina (3-0) took a 45-32 lead into the break.

Carlos Delfino made three free throws in the last 10 seconds to secure Argentina's 78-74 victory over Germany in the opening game for both teams at the basketball world championship. Delfino, who plays for the Milwaukee Bucks, finished with 27 points and Luis Scola, who plays for the Houston Rockets, added 20.
Greece beats China 89-81 at basketball worlds

Nikolaos Zisis and Ioannis Bourousis both scored 21 points to lead Greece to an 89-81 victory over China in the opening Group C game at the world basketball championship on Saturday. Greece led 47-37 at halftime, but China, playing without Houston Rockets center Yao Ming who is recovering from surgery on his left foot, got within 81-79 before Greece retook control in the final minutes.

Yao Ming has been cleared to participate in basketball activities, and the Houston Rockets center appears on pace to be ready for the start of the regular season. Yao missed all of the 2009-10 season after surgery on his left foot. A team doctor declared Monday that Yao’s foot had healed. "It’s great news," Rockets GM Daryl Morey told the Houston Chronicle . Houston Rockets All-Star center Yao Ming is confident that he'll be ready for the start of the regular season after a team doctor declared his surgically repaired foot fully healed. Yao missed last season after undergoing complex surgery on his left foot in July 2009. Team doctor Tom Clanton has cleared Yao to resume basketball activities.
